They’ve been away for a while, but those adorable Pikmin are to return in Pikmin 3 for the Wii U. Creator Shigeru Miyamoto unveiled it during Nintendo’s E3 showcase, revealing a new Pikmin and how the Wii U’s special tablet controller will be used.Pikmin 3 can be controlled with the regular Wiimote and nunchuck, where the precision can help to carefully fling Pikmin. Like this, the tablet merely shows the map. However, you can also control it entirely with the tablet, where the map view makes the game more strategic. You can control up to four squad leaders in Pikmin 3, so you’ll be able to quickly whip around the map to issue orders. The new Pikmin is a rock type, which can be used to smash fragile objects.Miyamoto explained that as casual gaming grows in popular, he hopes Pikmin 3 can tempt people into playing something a little deeper.Hit Nintendo’s site for more.

The battle of streaming video services rages on, and a new contender has hit a game console. Amazon Video is available now on the PlayStation Store, letting Amazon members stream their video selection through your PlayStation 3. The app is free, and opens up the library of streaming videos for rental or purchase. The announcement on the PlayStation Blog notes that the service has more than 120,000 movies and TV shows to pick from. If you’re an Amazon Prime member, 17,000 of those videos are free to stream at no additional cost. The app lets you start a 30-day trial of Prime, and it costs $79 per year for membership — which includes a few other perks like free two-day shipping. The blog notes that it’s the first to offer the service, but doesn’t mention any kind of exclusivity arrangement. We would expect other console manufacturers, particularly Microsoft with its renewed focus on streaming video apps, to follow suit.

QUICKTAKE: The Pikmin series returns after an eight-year hiatus and helps launch Nintendo’s next-gen console with its classic formula. Pikmin 3 shows off the HD prowess of the Wii U with a vibrant, colorful world. The Pikmin series also moves forward with the debut of Rock Pikmin (the first of several new variations) and new Pikmin abilities.THE DEMO: The public demo featured a seven-minute time trial stage that tasked the new series protagonist with gathering fruit. Doing so involved freeing the Rock Pikmin from captivity and finding new ways to use the Red Pikmin. A boss battle featured a gigantic parasite with fearsome pincers.DETAILS: Pikmin 3 built on the prior Pikmin titles (albeit without Captain Olimar, who’s sitting this one out) by offering much of the same intuitive gameplay with some handy new control mechanics. This demo was played primarily with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, with the Wii U GamePad being used as an overhead map. If I found myself lost, finding my way was a simple matter of looking at the GamePad. I could also slide my finger along the GamePad touch screen to move the camera towards a desired area. The Pikmin armyManaging the Pikmin remains a simple matter of gathering them together with the B button, while aiming at targets with the Wii Remote. There wasn’t much in the way of enemies in this demo, but I was quick to chuck Pikmin towards the few creatures that did threaten me. One enemy was a flying blob-like creature that was holding several Rock Pikmin inside its body. After disposing of it, I added the Rock Pikmin to my army.Sending Pikmin to do my bidding is just as satisfying as ever. In addition to using them against enemies, I could also use them to open up paths for me. I chucked Red Pikmin at a sandy structure and watched them eat away at it. Rock Pikmin could likewise be used to break through crystallized structures. Red Pikmin have also been granted the ability to build bridges. After finding random chunks of rock near a gap, I sent the Red Pikmin to collect them and watched as they put together a solid bridge. After I finished my fruit-collecting quest, I jumped into a boss battle. A large blue parasite sporting pincers, a hard shell, and hundreds of legs came to fight me in an arena setting. Defeating the creature involved tossing Pikmin at its head while avoiding its lunges. Several hidden pockets of Pikmin lined up corners of the area, in case I needed reinforcements. The boss battle wasnt overly difficult and painted a good picture of what to expect out of Pikmin 3′s lush new world. While Pikmin 3 may not represent a giant leap in gameplay innovation, it does serve as a banner title for Nintendo’s jump into HD. The Pikmin and their world have never looked better, thanks to its crisp, higher-resolution textures. It should make long-time fans of the series happy and also show off just what the Wii U can do visually.

Update: Now includes official title.Gears of War Judgment is being made at least in part by Bulletstorm developer People can Fly. Rumors had been rumbling that the developer was at work on something in the Gears franchise, and Epic Games’ Mike Capps confirmed the news.Capps tweeted “YES YES YES!” in response to questions if People Can Fly is involved. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the developer is developing it alone, or even taking the lead, but it would certainly make sense if Epic is moving on to other projects after three Gears games. We do know that People Can Fly has been fairly quiet since the release of Bulletstorm, so the team must be up to something. We’ll probably know for sure next Monday, during Microsoft’s E3 press conference.

Dark coming to Xbox 360 and PC in 2013 – Video Game News, Videos and File Downloads for PC and Console Games at Shacknews

We’re going to guess that RealmForge’s new game, DARK, isn’t going to be the most uplifting title. The developers of Dungeons are trying their hand at a new genre, moving away from strategy into third-person stealth-action.Players assume the role of a vampire trying to uncover the secrets of the GeoForge Corporation. You’ll hunt targets in a futuristic cityscape utilizing vampire-enhanced stealth skills.Combining a unique cel-shaded open world with intriguing vampire abilities–like turning into a puff of smoke–RealmForge’s new game certainly sounds like it has potential. However, given Dungeon’s lackluster reviews and the ambitious scale of the project, we’re a little skeptical.DARKDark will be available on Xbox 360 and PC in early 2013.

Activision, EA settle Infinity Ward dispute – Video Game News, Videos and File Downloads for PC and Console Games at Shacknews

Activision Blizzard and Electronic Arts have reached a settlement in a lawsuit surrounding the firing of Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella. EA had been accused of conspiring with the pair to leave Activision form an independent studio. Neither party has disclosed the terms of the settlement, but they will reportedly ask the court to dismiss the claims.”Activision and Electronic Arts have decided to put this matter behind them,” said Activision lawyer Beth Wilkinson.Robert Schwartz, a lawyer for West and Zampella, took a less cheerful tone. “Activision dragged EA into the case hoping to distract from Activision’s wretched conduct towards West and Zampella,” he said, according to a Bloomberg report. “In dismissing EA today, Activision admits that it was never going to convince anyone that EA conspired with West and Zampella to breach their contracts or did anything else improper.”This is coming out just as court documents are released, alleging that former senior IT director Thomas Fenady was instructed to “dig up dirt” on West and Zampella. The LA Times reports that Fenady expressed concern about the so-called “Project Icebreaker,” but was told not to worry about repercussions. Outside companies worried about the legal hurdles, and Fenady considered a fake fumigation or mock fire drill to gain access to the pair’s computers.Ultimately, he didn’t follow through on these ideas. Giant Bomb reports that chief public policy officer George Rose denies asking Fenady to dig up dirt, but does affirm he asked Fenady to monitor e-mail traffic. With the EA matter settled and some money paid out to IWEG employees, it seems like Activision is clearing the stage for its legal battle against West and Zampella themselves. That trial is still set to go forward on May 29. The Infinity Ward Employee Group will also be included in the suit, still seeking $350 million in damages and unpaid royalties. A few days ago the group was given $42 million in unpaid royalties plus interest, which the group’s lawyer called a “cynical attempt to look good before the jury trial.”

After a recessed hearing yesterday that allowed the parties to try to resolve their differences, a settlement has been reached in the case involving Activision, Infinity Ward co-founders Jason West and Vincent Zampella, and 40 ex-Call of Duty developers from Infinity Ward. The settlement details are confidential, an attorney for West and Zampella told The Verge today. While West and Zampella wouldn’t offer comment, The Verge’s Michael McWhertor told Twitter that there was a “beaming smile” on West’s face.A statement released by Activision tried to allay any financial analysts’ concerns, saying the one-time charges related to the settlement shouldn’t impact the company’s earnings outlook for the current quarter or the calendar year, citing “stronger-than-expected operating performance in the current quarter.”The deal brings a close to the contentious case, which started almost two years ago. The trial was scheduled to begin tomorrow, with billions of dollars at stake. Shacknews will stay on top of the story and add more details as they become available.

Q-Games’ latest PixelJunk game isn’t really a game per se. Instead, it’s a music creation app that utilizes the PlayStation Move. “This is an instrument built from the ground-up to fully utilize the PlayStation Move hardware,” Q-Games’ Rowan Parker explained. “We’ve built a Virtual Canvas in space for you. Your PlayStation Move is then tracked through space using a vibrant palette of changing sphere colors. Imagine an intricate Audio Canvas floating in space that you can use to paint and craft music on.”If that description didn’t give you a clear indication of how it plays, this official trailer won’t help either:4am performers will be able to broadcast live shows over the PlayStation Network. But what if you don’t have a Move? What if all you want to do is watch?Q-Games has announced that a free viewer app will be available to everyone, downloadable on the PlayStation Network. “You can use it to stream any live performances currently happening worldwide. Follow your favorite performers, leave it running as live background music at parties or just enjoy the visuals powered by the PS3 SPU’s brute force,” the PlayStation.Blog notes. The bizarre music creation app–and free viewer app–will be available on PS3 some time in “Spring.”

More trouble is mounting for THQ. The embattled publisher is now the subject of a lawsuit from sportswear company Adidas. The company claims THQ is in breach of contract for failing to produce a promised piece of coaching software called “miCoach 24/7.”The suit was filed in the Multnomah County Circuit Court, based near Adidas America in Portland Oregon. Oregon Live reports that Adidas announced the miCoach line to compete with products like the Nike+ and Garmin sport watches, and entered a deal to have THQ release the miCoach 24/7 product by January of this year.THQ told Adidas it wouldn’t be able to complete the game in December, amid layoffs that impacted the miCoach team. Adidas is seeking $10.6 million in damages, including an injunction that THQ not sell or transfer the rights to the miCoach game. This is yet another problem mounting for THQ, after disappointing sales have led to layoffs and the threat of stock delisting. THQ had counted on the uDraw to be a hit, but it fizzled. THQ has since shaved off most of its kids and licensed properties, and is pushing into the core space alongside mobile and social games.

Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward has made no secret his desire to create a video game adaptation of his popular Cartoon Network series. “If it was a small budget I’d work to make a sidescroller,” he said last year. “But if we had the largest budget in the world I’d love to make something like Oblivion, but set in the Adventure Time universe where it’s a giant free-roaming world.”Unfortunately for fans, The Elder Scrolls VI: Adventure Time is not happening. But at least a game is in the works.Ward told fans on Twitter (via Tiny Cartridge) that an Adventure Time game is coming to the DS. The game will be developed by WayForward Technologies, the studio behind recent games like Mighty Switch Force and Aliens: Infestation. While Ward originally said the game was for the 3DS, he later clarified that it will be a DS game. (3DS supports backwards compatibility with original DS games.) “To be clear y’all, it’s a DS game, it’s gonna be hot to trot like a horse,” Ward said. The game is aiming for a release by the end of the year.
