The principle of debuff sizes In World of Warcraft

Dealing with debuffs in a PvP environment is a completely different beast than dealing with them in a raid or group environment. Each person in a raid group has a job to do, and usually you know when a debuff is coming. The success of a debuffer is based less on the ability to prioritize targets, but rather to do the job effectively. In PvP, that is turned on its head. Prioritization and understanding the battlefield are crucial for the PvP aficionado.

Moore’s interface incorporates heavy use of large debuff indicators underneath a teammate’s unit frame. By easily spotting who has the giant debuff under the squad bars, Moore can remedy the situation in a faster, more productive matter. Every HP counts in the arena, so the faster the player is alerted to a debuff ticking down, the better his reaction can be.

Including the cluttered version of the user interface is a godsend here, and PvPers will understand why immediately. Debuff prioritization is a skill. The interface can only help ease the pain and suffering of using that skill. Seeing everything the way Moore sees it alleviates the issue of a guessing game. Sure, the icons are huge, but their hugeness is only proportional to their importance.

I’m stealing the pet bar idea

One of the awesome pieces of interface goodness Moore added to his already super UI was the location of the pet bar, sitting snugly above the pet unit frame. By setting the length and scale just right, the pet bar is the perfect length, connecting the two unit frames very simply.

Why do I love the pet bar so much? It’s in the perfect place. Actually, a ton of the pieces are in perfect places. Targets of unit frames are neatly piled on top of their respective frames, showing the user who exactly is targeting whom. The simplicity of Stuf unit frames works to Moore’s advantage, creating a clean setup that stands out during any battle. Resting the pet bar on top of the pet’s unit frame, especially in PvP, allows spatial recognition of the pet’s status while providing a convenient place to control the pet. Cast bars are placed in crucial spots all along the center, and the peripheral vision areas are kept clean, litter-free and shiny in order to see all of the action.

Simple and stark colors make the UI pleasing to look at and easy on the eyes, even when cluttered with debuffs and arena frames. Pick a color and stick to it. Gradients and effects are pretty and all, but when dealing with PvP and reaction time, the last thing you want to be thinking about is whether that number is a 5 or a 6 because of the crazy texture you added to your unit frames. Simple is key.

Lisa Poisso as Prupher, the tauren druid

With wrist problems after a long day of clicking and scrolling turning my mouse hand into a — well, into something more closely resembling a tauren hoof, Prupher hasn’t spent a lot of time afield this week. Dutifully dropping all my Silvermoon quests and heading to The Barrens for the next round of questing, I found myself blessedly free from the siren call of Bloodthistle … only to be ensnared by the gold farmer show in Orgrimmar. How is it that I’ve never managed to stay in town long enough to witness the full blossoming of orcs suspended in mid-air, magically transforming from a three-dimensional heart into a sales message and then into a gold farming website address? These leaping, sleeping salesmen have come a long way from the static corpses that used to litter the ground in front of the auction house (although I have to admit that as fascinating as the process was to observe, I can’t say that it provoked any urge whatsoever to visit their site or buy their services).

After breaking free from the sights of Orgrimmar, I managed to make it to Thunder Bluff, only to be snared yet again by the notorious harpies quest. Wrath takes a lot of mana at level 10! I had to run back up the lift to get more milk. (Why can’t I summon it? I’m a cow! Hmm …) Finally, I trotted off through the dust toward the Crossroads. As I ran, I watched one guild member earnestly informing the rest of the guild that those WoW.com staffers never really logged in except during special events … I bleated a moo or two into guildchat, but my hoof wasn’t typing very well by that point. So I clomped into town, filled up my quest log and went inside the have a nice, peaceful cup of tea with the innkeeper until this week. I’ve decided that even if my hoof isn’t click-worthy this week, typing by itself isn’t so bad — so I’ll come back and chat everyone’s ears off. “Not on except during special events,” indeed! /moo

Robin Torres as Robidin, the tauren paladin

Times are tough here in Mulgore. Those vile boarbeasts are defiling our lands and killing our people. My first duty as a paladin brave was to get vengeance for and give a proper burial to a Greatmother. These are not happy days. However, I feel that the addition of Sunwalkers and priests among our own will help us clear out our homelands and make us strong again.

Robin Torres as Robinemia, the undead huntress

I have no sympathy for you, Cowadin! Try dying and coming back to “life” with all of your friends and family wanting you dead … again. At least you have the option to go back home. But I am not bitter. I like my new home. I honor the Dark Lady and do her bidding loyally and willingly. Our allies are an interesting sort that provide lucrative adventures as well.

Let me tell you about the O-Team. A whole shipload of drunken orc pirates are stranded in Silverpine Forest. They had me do some simple tasks for them and then requested I save some of their people from some spiders. So I headed over, collecting diseased organs along the way (our apothecaries are an odd bunch). I found and freed the orc sea dogs and they followed me around, helping me eradicate the spiders. An ettin showed up to step on us, but these fierce fighters — the O-Team — were able to dispatch him easily.

We then entered the mine to search for the Matriarch … else she would just create more arachnids to terrorize the area. We fought our way back only to find an empty lair — or so we thought. I had neglected to look up. The enormous legs were the first parts we saw of her. I will admit it: I thought that I was fearless in my undead state, but the fact is that she did more than startle me. I felt real fear. Briefly. The O-Team made short work of her, as well. Unfortunately, once we had eliminated the threat, the O-Team left me. So I can’t have the constant help of orc pirates anymore. I will miss them.

I am looking forward to completing more tasks in Silverpine. But, I must admit, I will be sorry to leave here. Being in such close proximity to Lady Sylvanas is a real privilege. And the atmosphere of the entire area is very.

Know Your Lore: The Old Gods, part four — their dread shadow
The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You’re playing the game, you’re fighting the bosses, you know the how — but do you know the why? Each week, Matthew Rossi and Anne Stickney make sure you Know Your Lore by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

To date we’ve discussed C’Thun and Yogg-Saron, the Old Gods that have to date made an appearance in the game. But they’re far from the only Old Gods on Azeroth, and the Old Gods on Azeroth are far from the only Old Gods in the entire Warcraft universe. As we discussed before, the Old Gods are a universal phenomenon, spreading chaos and destruction wherever they go, whether they’re being summoned into Outland’s Shadowmoon Valley or having their servitors corrupt the former prison wing of the naaru vessel Tempest Keep.

So far in the Cataclysm beta, we’ve seen the Twilight’s Hammer more or less in full on “Let’s bring the Old Gods back!” mode. They’re running excavations in Darkshore and the Twilight Higlands, their camps have sprung up on the shores of Thousand Needles’ new submerged environment, and entities like Soggoth and Isorath have been discovered. (Until I hear differently, I’m still assuming that Isorath is an actual Old God, because if not man, that’s one really big mess of tentacles for a servitor.) But these are far from the only potential places where the Old Gods’ presence can be felt.

While not an Old God itself, Soggoth the Slitherer is clearly meant as a major threat to all life on Azeroth, an entity perhaps on the scale of a General Vezax or Rajaxx (perhaps even more potent;he’s clearly larger than either of them) that even when only partially resurrected, required the aid of a veritable army of Ancients (the tree ones) to defeat. As we discover through questing in and around his resting place in the Master’s Glaive region of Darkshore, Soggoth at his full power defeated an army of over 20 of the Titans’ greatest stone giant champions and was only rendered into his current state because one of them accepted destruction in order to be lifted close enough to bury a huge Titan-crafted sword in its head.

Soggoth shares a similar form to Vezax and the faceless ones, a massive tentacled head and a loathsome, shambling body. Where he comes from is as unknown as Vezax, although we may assume that much as Rajaxx in Ahn’Qiraj, both Vezax and Soggoth may have been shaped by one or many Old Gods to serve as a leader of unfathomable armies. It’s interesting to note that despite its being stated that C’Thun is directly responsible for the creation of the aqir, qiraji and nerubians, that Harbinger Skyriss in the Arcatraz seems to serve a different group of Old Gods entirely. This suggests that the Old Gods either share information or work from a common pool of corruptive techniques in the creation of their servitors, working with whatever materials come to hand. This itself suggests that Soggoth may be the ultimate outcome of the Curse of Flesh and that its techniques may well have been used elsewhere in the cosmos, perhaps on many different worlds.

Back on Azeroth, any list of potential regions that may or may not have felt the grasping clutch of their dread shadow on Azeroth must include the Tirisfal Glades. Why the Tirisfal Glades? There are no huge tentacled maws or half-buried giant heads with swords in them anywhere around there. No, that’s very true. What there is, however, is an interesting story of what happened when the ancestors of the modern blood elves arrived on the shores of the Eastern Kingdoms.

The Warcraft Encyclopedia – High Elves
Many of the elves died from exposure or starvation during their long journey. In addition to these hardships, the elves were forced to flee the site of their first settlement, Tirisfal Glades, due to a mysterious evil influence that drove many of their number mad.

source

While this tantalizing hint of a submerged evil driving the high elves under Dath’Remar Sunstrider to flee the glades is interesting, it’s hardly the only instance of a force connected to the Old Gods wreaking havoc and madness on the minds of mortals. One cannot ignore the possible connection to Hakkar the Soulflayer and the Emerald Nightmare. While we’ve seen a resolution of sorts of the Emerald Nightmare (certainly it is at the moment a far less pressing threat than, say, a crazy dragon aspect), we must note that it was in Hakkar’s prison in the Sunken Temple that Eranikus first fell to its corruption, and that Ysera’s consort was only cleansed after another four dragons from the green flight fell to it as well. (It may also be worthwhile to note that Hakkar itself has often been rumored to be connected in some way to the Old Gods.) It’s also clear that the Nightmare Lord himself was merely a pawn.

Waking Legends
Malfurion Stormrage: I fear for the worst, old friend. Within the Dream we fight a new foe, born of an ancient evil. Ysera’s ancient brood has fallen victim to the old whisperings. It seems as though the Nightmare has broken through the realm and seeks a new host on Azeroth.

source

The old whisperings are of course the same old whisperings that drove Deathwing himself mad, the siren call of the Old Gods. While we know almost nothing about Isorath besides its name and impressive size, we do know that the Twilight Highlands are a place where the barriers between Azeroth and the Elemental Plane are thin and reality itself twists. Whatever Isorath is, it is fully a part of this twisted and fractured place and it is just one sign that the influence of the Old Gods permeates the land, rotting and corrupting it wherever possible.

In the end, the reach of the Old Gods far exceeds their grasp. They defile dreams, drive minds to madness and always lurk, submerged, beneath the paltry skin of the world to rip everything we believe we know asunder.

Next week, we take a break from cosmic malevolence and take a look at the lost heroes of the Alliance Expedition.

The Azerothian Riddle Hunt

The ground rules

Level range: 55+
Time limit: an hour and a half
Required for participation: pencil and paper or other way of recording answers as they’re found
Where: answers found across Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms
Rules: This scavenger hunt is light on rules. No outside web sources allowed (on the honor system), but pretty much everything else is fair game. Trash-talking is encouraged, so long as it fits within your group’s atmosphere. Don’t be afraid to egg it on yourself!
Winning: The person with the most right answers wins the game; use time of answer turn-in to break ties.

Prep and setup

As with any scavenger hunt, thoughtful preparation will make your Azerothian Riddle Hunt go much smoother. Obviously, providing your participants with the riddles and having your prizes in hand are the most important things; however, a little extra work in prep goes a very long way.

Know what you are going to award in advance, and get it in hand by the start of race time. That way, you’re not scrambling to do that last bit of farming or what have you, and you can mail out the prizes or hand them over directly when you announce the winners. Plan for first-, second- and third-place winners. I like to give everyone something small for participating, too, as long as I do not expect to have too many players.

Have your list of riddles written out ahead of time in whatever form you need to get it to your players. I like to provide my players with three ways of getting their lists, including our guild website, an event channel in game, and lists sent via in-game mail. Any method you use has to be ready to go with the push of a button or two at start time. It helps immensely to have your list prepped and written out somewhere, so that it can just be copied and pasted into whichever form you are using. Don’t forget to have the rules, including how players should get the answers to you, written down somewhere for easy copying and pasting; you will have to either write them at the top of all of your lists or repeat them often.

Pick a location for your toon to wait, and be there by the time the event starts. This is helpful because it makes you easy to find over the course of the race, so that your players know where to pick up in-game lists or ask questions. You should be prepared to hand out lists in one form or another throughout the duration of the hunt. In my experience, this hunt does not always handicap latecomers so harshly that they cannot place. Having your toon physically in a set place also means that at the end of the race, you already have a gathering point from which to announce winners and hand out prizes.

The riddles

Changed to bustling busy overnight,
the halved zone map was never the same.
The druids opened for business in the rare uptime’s light,
including the innkeeper. What’s her name?

Though after our time, we may be familiar
with the giant sea monster raring to fight.
Between the Defias and him, it couldn’t be trickier.
With how many cannon can we aid the island’s plight?

Many crystals dot the zone
of jungles and stompy danger,
but DK would feel at home.
Since his folk carry what, they are no stranger?

A little-known strand normally,
bustles busily when Midsummer is near.
Housing a poorly known instance, quite comfortably.
What clams are part of the local mob’s gear?

A dragon, fierce but lonely
has nothing but himself to talk to,
though neighbors he has in a-plenty.
What giants has he chosen not to schmooze?

To the place of epic mob trains,
in the desert where ruins lie,.
an instance where it never rains.
How many trolls are there just inside?

Restoration committees hemmed and hawed,
after the crash that stranded them all,
But their priorities may be a little bit flawed.
How many mailboxes did they install?

A city of nature, of green and blue,
yet drowning death to a tailoring gnome,
where priestesses watch yet retain their cool.
How many benches reside within the dome?

A horrible plague covers northern Kalimdor,
a clan recruiting for murderous raids,
while plantains, fried, they do yet adore.
Which feathers will they take in trade?

A zone of green and ruins will not narrow it down,
but choose none of the three and go straight to the center.
For fighting the Razza, may win you the crown.
When standing, where may you see the fight better?

Ghostcrawler – Lead Systems Designer In World of Warcraft
Focus — We think we’re in a much better spot for focus regen now. Our goal has been for focus to be a resource you spend on your higher damage shots, which is regenerated passively at a rate lower than energy regen, but faster than energy if you are using Steady / Cobra (which can only be done while stationary). At the lower regen rates, we found it felt bad if you couldn’t Steady / Cobra rather than Steady / Cobra feeling like a bonus. We think we’re closer to the sweet spot now, but please let us know (preferably after you’ve actually tried it rather than prophesizing doom).

Aspects — We’re not happy with the way the Hawk vs. Fox choice is playing out. We think that ultimately either damage or focus regen is going to win out and the other aspect won’t get much use. For now, we are going back to Hawk being used for damage and regen. We’ll discuss other potential uses for Fox. Changing Aspects will not affect focus regen.

Mobile damage — This is always a touchy subject. In our testing, we found that it wasn’t fun with the current implementation when hunters had to move around a lot, especially in PvP. This is why we are giving up on the current Aspect of the Fox design. We also significantly reduced the focus cost per damage of Arcane Shot, so that it is usable under almost all circumstances. We’ve also removed the focus costs on several utility abilities (e.g. Concussive Shot, Intimidation, Bestial Wrath, Scatter Shot, etc.) One potential use for Aspect of the Fox is to generate additional focus when you take damage, but we don’t want to get back into a world where you are “aspect twisting” when someone comes into melee with you in PvP.

Survival — We’re still iterating a lot on this tree in particular. We agree it’s probably the least polished of the hunter trees so far. The reason is that we just have it in for Survival hunters.

Pets — As I posted in another thread recently, a pet scaling pass is underway. We still plan to do passes on the hunter pet talents and abilities as well. With the design that allows you to swap pets often in the field, we want to make sure that there are some interesting choices in which pet you use for a given situation. Provided they are all crabs.

In case I need to say it, the last two sentences of the last two paragraphs are not meant to be taken seriously.

China is finally getting Wrath of the Lich King

It’s been a long, hard, ridiculous road for Blizzard to get the Chinese government’s approval to make Wrath of the Lich King content available to their citizens. So ridiculous, in fact, that it’s difficult to nail down just which related stories are the most important. We could tell you about:

* How it was reportedly ready to go in early 2009, but Blizzard’s Chinese then-distributor The9 was released from its duties after poor management;

* How WoW China’s new distributor, NetEase, had to get the entire game re-approved, and upon its relaunch, it faced heavy censorship not requested under its previous owners;

* How the entire re-approval process may have been politically motivated due to US-China trade relations;

* How Wrath’s content review by the government was halted due to collecting subscription fees being “illegal” and creation of new accounts was suspended pending investigation;

* And how Burning Crusade was only just approved a few months ago.

And there’s a ton more to it. But we might finally be nearing the end of this sordid story, according to the Wall Street Journal. Wrath of the Lich King is set to launch in China next week, barring any more instances of draconian politics, censorship, or mismanagement. Let’s just hope that nobody in China wants to play as a death knight.

World of Warcraft Druid:Leveling 10-20 and how to spec
Hail and well met, Druids. I apologize for my lack of comments on the last Shifting Perspectives, but I was away that week on vacation with abysmal hotel wireless. After spending 20 minutes trying to send a single reply, I gave up and decided that my time on vacation was better spent gorging myself on the offerings of the resort’s culinary school. 4 days of coquilles St. Jacques, filet mignon, and venison sausage in puff pastry left me unable to move, but fortunately I have recovered sufficiently to roll myself, Violet Beauregarde-style, in the direction of the laptop for today’s column.

Levels 10 through 20 will be among your most interesting and frustrating as a Druid, and they’re certainly among the most volatile; as of patch 3.2, you will gain 4 of the Druid’s possible forms within these levels, with the biggest alteration to your playstyle likely to occur at 20 with Cat form. Be forewarned that this resulted in a fairly lengthy, 3-part article.

Ready to go?

After reading through the comments on our 1-9 guide, I feel obligated to note that these guides are being written with the following assumptions:

1. I assume that you do not have access to BoA items.

It’s just a nice bonus if you do.

2. I assume your Druid is not starting life as the offspring of a wealthy main, with an array of BoE items awaiting them as they level.

Not everyone’s that well-off — and even if you are, there’s no law saying your Druid is on the same server (or of the same faction). I won’t tell you to do something that only a character with 1,000g worth of gear and enchants can realistically do at a certain level.

3. I assume that you’re not necessarily familiar with the game at large or with the gameplay of a ranged/melee DPS.

The readership demographic for WoW.com leveling guides runs the gamut from very experienced players of multiple classes to people who have only just bought the game yesterday. I do apologize to more experienced players who may resent being given advice they don’t think they need, but when I started this game I did not know my arse from my elbow. I have very vivid memories of spending an afternoon wiping over and over again trying to get Supervisor Fitzsprocket done, and have no desire to inflict that on anyone else.

/end apologia pro leveling guide sua

LEVEL 10

Your shapeshifting odyssey begins, but you’ve got a few other things to train first:
Mark of the Wild, rank 2: standard upgrade, but very nice in that now you’ll get +2 to all attributes in addition to extra armor. Again, keep this up at all times.
Moonfire, rank 2: standard upgrade.
Nature’s Grasp, rank 1: This is essentially an insta-cast version of Entangling Roots, with the caveat being that a mob or enemy player has to hit you in order for it to trigger. When you cast Nature’s Grasp, you’ll notice yourself gaining a buff. If nothing hits you while Nature’s Grasp is active, it simply fades away and won’t do anything. If something does hit you, it gets rooted. Because NG is castable in all combat forms and Tree of Life, it’s a good escape skill to hit when you’re fighting a melee mob (or a caster mob you can line-of-sight) and your health is dangerously low. Hit NG, take off, the mob will get itself rooted on its next hit, put some distance between yourself and the enemy, then heal up.
Rejuvenation, rank 2: standard upgrade.
All done shelling out to that extortionist posing as a class trainer? All right, let’s get started. Your trainer will now offer you the first Druid class quest for Bear form. While different, the Night Elf and Tauren experiences are still largely the same –

The Alliance chain:

Heeding the Call: Get thee to Mathrengyl Bearwalker in Darnassus. You’ll find him on the second level of the Druid trainers’ tree in the Cenarion Enclave (35,8).
Moonglade: You’ll be taught the Teleport: Moonglade spell and asked to find Dendrite Starblaze. Cast it, and you’ll find yourself in front of a house in Moonglade. Dendrite is located inside on the second floor (56,30).
Great Bear Spirit: Dendrite asks you to find and speak with the Great Bear Spirit in Moonglade, who is located in the northwestern end of the zone at 39,27.
Back to Darnassus: With your lesson learned, Dendrite packs you off to Darnassus on a free flight. The Cenarion Circle flightmaster (who provides courtesy flights for all Night Elf Druids to Darnassus) is located at 44,45 at the south point of Nighthaven. The Alliance-affiliated flightmaster (you might as well pick up the flight path while you’re here) is located in southern Moonglade at 48,67.
Body and Heart: Mathrengyl will send you to Darkshore to fight Lunaclaw, a level 12 NPC who needs to be summoned at the Moonkin Stone (43,46 inside the central cave). This is due east and just outside of Auberdine. I would advise reading the comments on the Wowhead entry linked, as it has several helpful tips, but Lunaclaw is not a difficult fight; you’ll spend more time clearing pesky moonkin mobs than you will fighting him. Once you sprinkle the Cenarion moondust on the Moonkin Stone, it’ll take 1-3 seconds before Lunaclaw actually spawns and runs into the cave from outside. As he does, toss a Rejuvenation on yourself, Moonfire him, then Wrath him to death. Once he’s dead, talk to his spirit and head back to Mathrengyl in Darnassus.
The Horde chain:

Heeding the Call: Get thee to Turak Runetotem on Elder Rise in Thunder Bluff. He’s the NPC ahead and to your left as you enter the Druid tent.
Moonglade: You’ll be taught the Teleport: Moonglade spell and asked to find Dendrite Starblaze. Cast it, and you’ll find yourself in front of a house in Moonglade. Dendrite is located inside on the second floor (56,30).
Great Beat Spirit: Dendrite asks you to find and speak with the Great Bear Spirit in Moonglade, who is located in the northwestern end of the zone at 39,27.
Back to Thunder Bluff: With your lesson learned, Dendrite packs you off to Thunder Bluff on a free flight. The Cenarion Circle flightmaster (who provides courtesy flights for all Tauren Druids to Thunder Bluff) is located at 44,45 at the south point of Nighthaven. The Horde-affiliated flightmaster (you might as well pick up the flight path while you’re here) is located in southwestern Moonglade at 32,66.
Body and Heart: Turak will send you to the Mulgore/Barrens border to fight Lunaclaw, a level 12 NPC who needs to be summoned at the Moonkin Stone (42,60 just before the border with Mulgore. Essentially, take the road out of Mulgore and hang a right as you exit into the Barrens). As with the Night Elves’ version of Lunaclaw, this is not a difficult fight, but you have slightly more advance warning of Lunaclaw’s approach then they will (here he has to come around a tree and walk a little bit longer to reach you). Toss a Rejuvenation on yourself, Moonfire him, then Wrath him to death. Once he’s dead, talk to his spirit and head back to Turak in Thunder Bluff.

Bear Form starts with the following abilities:
Basic melee: At this level, nothing to write home about, but it will be slightly better than your caster form’s melee attack.
Growl: This is your single-target taunt, forcing a mob to attack you for 3 seconds. This only finds use while tanking or distracting a mob off someone else; you don’t have to spend any time convincing mobs to attack you while you’re soloing. As of patch 3.0.8, it has a 30-yard range but is still considered a spell. In other words, you can be silenced out of the ability to taunt. While this may sound odd, it’s still nothing compared to one of the most unbelievably stupid mechanics once in the game; before patch 2.3, Growl’s chance to hit was also subject to +spell hit, which you’ve probably noticed is not exactly a common stat on tanking gear. Thus tanks were saddled with a ghastly 17% taunt failure rate on raid bosses like Al’ar, which often had fatal results. Show of hands; who misses that?
Maul: This is a clone of the Warrior ability Heroic Strike right down to the threat coefficient. It replaces your next white attack (i.e. auto-attack or basic melee) with a stronger yellow (i.e. special) attack. This has the unfortunate effect of consuming not only the rage cost of the skill itself, but also cancels the rage you would have generated from a white attack landing. Consequently, Maul gobbles both existing and potential rage, and is one of the primary culprits behind the Bear’s horrible rage efficiency at this level (more on this in a moment). But it’s an invaluable threat and damage tool at later levels and, like Heroic Strike, needs to be spammed for maximum threat generation, so hotkey it someplace easily accessible (however, due to its effect on rage generation, I wouldn’t recommend macroing it to other abilities yet).
Your Druid trainer will also teach you:
Demoralizing Roar: This is a useful attack power-reduction tool versus melee enemies, but probably not worth the global cooldown (GCD) to put up at this level. What little rage you’ll be generating will be needed for DPS. Demo Roar can be useful as an initial aggro tool on multiple enemies, but it’s minimal threat at best; you want to slap it up to reduce incoming damage, not to generate aggro.
Once you’ve gained Bear Form, you’ll notice something about its offensive capability; it doesn’t have any. Many Druids who go through the initial class quest are disheartened to find that taking their shiny new form out for a test drive is like being strapped to a chair watching paint dry to the accompaniment of Wagner’s Ring Cycle. You will typically kill more quickly in caster form, to the point where, even if you plan to level Feral, it may be worth your time to spec Balance between 10 and 19. So no, you’re not doing it wrong — caster form really is better for the moment.

Reading over what I’ve written, I’m a little uncomfortable with how gloomy much of it sounds, but after leveling two Druids recently through this content to make sure it’s current for present concerns, I’m still struck at how agonizing the early Bear really is. So I just want to say this before we get any further; at 80 you’ll be mowing through enemies like a hot knife through butter, soloing old raids and heroics, and uttering a disdainful laugh at the phrase “group quest.” Hang in there.

There are multiple ways to create “cheap” gold at the auction house but due to time i’m only going to share one way in this guide.

Keep in mind that I will be adding more guides later and more auction house guides also. I call it “cheap” gold because you do not have to spend real money to get this gold! I guess I should call it FREE gold instead.

Buy low, sell high! You always hear that but how do you use that to your advantage? That’s what this world of warcraft gold guide is all about.

First thing you MUST do is download/install the auctioneer addon. This addon will save you tons of time in the future as it will help you find items that are selling way below actual prices. This is by far the best addon I have ever seen. (Probably because I spend 90% of the time in game at the auction house!)

Once you have auctioneer installed you will want to just scan the auction house a lot for about a week to get accurate values on items. By a lot I mean no more than 3 times a day. Try to do morning, afternoon, and then again in the evening. What’s that you say? You have to work? Well, you do not want to scan less than once per day. I find myself only scanning 2 times a day because I don’t have a whole lot of free time anymore to play.

Now that you have at least a week worth of data you can start finding things to buy for pennies while you sell them for gold!

There is a function in auctioneer that will tell you what items are selling for way cheap and you can even specify for it to show items that will make you 5-10 gold if you want. Probably one of the BEST features of the auctioneer addon! Once you do that you will also want to do a manual search on the auction house to double check prices and make sure that the price wasn’t dropped because of that item being flooded on the auction house.

You will also want to check to make sure how many times the item has been listed on the auction house since you started scanning, just to make sure someone originally didn’t jack up the price when it shouldn’t have been. On a side note, this will not be the case too much after you have scanned the auction house everyday for a month or so.

Now that you found an item and bought it you are going to relist it! There are some simple rules to follow when listing items on the auction house. First, you ALWAYS want to list items for 24 hours any less time and you are wasting money. Second, ALWAYS set a buy out price on items. Think of it this way, when you found an item you want for your character on the auction house and the item doesn’t have a buy out price, what do you do? If you are like 99% of the players online you want it NOW! If you can’t have it now you look somewhere else. Am I right? Third, ALWAYS set your buy out price just a little lower than the competition. We want to sell the item as soon as possible and we don’t want to have to relist it unless it is a very high ticket item.

Ok, well that does it for this auction house guide. Remember to look for more gold guides for the auction house to come. As always be sure to bookmark this page and check out the other FREE world of warcraft guides

World of Warcraft Shifting Perspectives are issued affecting druids and those who group with them every week. Now,this week,we are proud to welcome a new generation of bears. With this article, you will get the detail informations about the world of warcraft’s gerring a new bear at 80.Read as fellow, get your need and share your spare time.

I’ve been getting an extraordinary number of requests to update our older posts on how to spec and gear a fresh bear, cat and tree at 80. At this point in Wrath, the information should stay fairly accurate through the end of the expansion, and I agree that this would be a great time to do it. For the next few weeks, we’ll examine how to get a new feral or restoration druid into fighting shape.

When we first started out, I split gear into categories like best drop, best reputation piece, best quest piece, etc., and I don’t think it’s necessary to do that anymore. It’s so much easier to get high-quality gear by running dungeons or hunting around for some crafted drops or PvP pieces. In particular, it needs to be said that a lot of really good bear pieces can be had from PvP. If you’ve got a pile of Stone Keeper’s Shards lying around (and many players do at this point), buy Wintergrasp Commendations with them when your faction has Wintergrasp, convert them to honor on your druid, and voila — you’ve got currency for some ridiculously good pieces.

A few notes before we start:

* I’m assuming you don’t have access to ICC-10 or -25, at least not on a regular basis. For all I know, maybe you play on a realm where bored players are pugging heroic Lich King-25, but that’s not the situation most bears new to 80 will be in. When it comes to pugging raids, tanks tend to be subjected to more scrutiny than other players, and it’s my assumption that you are interested in gearing a bear in order to tank rather than looking for pieces relevant to content you’re already doing.

* I’m assuming you probably have access to Onyxia, Vault of Archavon and (maybe) some ToC. Most servers have PUGs running this content fairly regularly (if not, start one!). Trial of the Crusader is a sticky wicket, but after waffling over my “Must not assume they’re raiding! Must not assume they’re raiding!” rule, I’ve compromised and listed the ilevel 245, tier 9 pieces available if you get your hands on a Trophy of the Crusade. With many players upgrading to tier 10 right now, there is much less competition for these.

* I’m not assuming you’re an arena star: Everyone can get Relentless and Furious gear these days with a little elbow grease, but Wrathful set pieces still require an arena rating to get, so screw that.

* This is not a comprehensive list. There are a lot of PvP pieces here, but I’ve listed only the Furious or above pieces. I think it’s a waste of time to grind honor toward anything below that. I’ve also eliminated most of the pieces we’ve previously covered in our February 2009 guide to bear gear. You may want to take a look at that if you’re still leveling your bear (it’ll give you some tips on good reputation pieces and quest rewards), but otherwise I consider much of the information obsolete (“I never look back, darling; it distracts from the now.” — Edna Mode).

* I am a huge cheapskate. I’ve pointed out alternatives to the more expensive choices where possible. The only exception to this is the weapon slot, which is problematic if you don’t or can’t raid. If you’re going to drop money anywhere, make it here and/or the boot and chest slots.

* For anyone without a very good Emblem of Frost income who wants to prioritize the order in which they get their pieces, I would buy the cloak first (you won’t replace it until well into Cataclysm), then the idol, and then the gloves, legs, helm and shoulders. If you’re running Vault of Archavon every week, you may want to buy the head and shoulders first, as Toravon has a chance to drop the gloves and legs.

A note on set bonuses

As with just about any tier of content you could name, non-set pieces may be better than their tier-set counterparts on an individual basis. A lot of the attraction of a tier piece lies in how good the corresponding set bonuses are. Tier 10 bonuses for bears are very, very good; the four-piece is essentially an additional Barkskin every minute, and the two-piece is a meaty damage boost to both single-target and AoE threat. I highly recommend getting the four-piece when you can and using an Ikfirus’s Sack of Wonder for the chest.

By contrast, tier 9 is take-it-or-leave-it territory, especially if you only have access to the ilevel 232 version. The four-piece bonus to Barkskin is nice if you find yourself tanking for any PUG raids at all, but that’s really about it. Don’t bother gearing around retaining it.

No matter what you do, if you have any combination of the following, you should consider yourself well geared.

Helm

To be frank, there aren’t a lot of outstanding options in this slot outside of raids. Fortunately, every option allows you to socket a meta gem, and the top six options are relatively close to each other.

Enchant: Arcanum of the Stalwart Protector (requires Argent Crusade revered)

Meta Gem: Austere Earthsiege Diamond

* Lasherweave Headguard: Available for 95 Emblems of Frost.

* Relentless Gladiator’s Dragonhide Helm: Available for 95 Emblems of Frost or 13,200 honor and 770 arena points.

* Runetotem’s Headguard of Triumph/Malfurion’s Headguard of Triumph: The ilevel 245, tier 9 head available for 75 Emblems of Triumph and 1 Trophy of the Crusade.

* Stormrage Coverlet: Dropped by Onyxia-25.

* Hood of Lethal Intent/Mask of Lethal Intent: The ilevel 245 non-set melee leather helm available for 75 Emblems of Triumph.

* Furious Gladiator’s Dragonhide Helm: Available for 75 Emblems of Triumph or 54,500 honor.

* Malfurion’s Headguard of Triumph (Alliance)/Runetotem’s Headguard of Triumph (Horde): The ilevel 232, tier 9 helm available for 50 Emblems of Triumph.

* Stormrage Helm: Dropped by Onyxia-10.

* Frayed Scoundrel’s Cap: Dropped by Devourer of Souls in heroic Forge of Souls.

* Mask of Distant Memory: Dropped by the Black Knight in heroic Trial of the Champion.

Neck

I was surprised to discover just how empty this slot still is; all of the really worthwhile stuff comes from raid. Actually, for the top pick, that’s still kinda true.

* Wodin’s Lucky Necklace: A BoE drop from ICC-25, but availability varies by realm. A raiding guild that’s been in ICC for a while is probably sick of seeing these things drop, so just shop around.

* Eskhandar’s Links: Dropped by Onyxia-25. Both this and the 10-man version have some nice +expertise, which can be tough for bears to get.

* Eskhandar’s Choker: Dropped by Onyxia-10.

* Shard of the Crystal Forest: Available for 19 Emblems of Conquest.

* Titanium Earthguard Chain: Jewelcrafting BoE.

* Sparkling Onyxia Tooth Pendant: Available from the questline started by the Head of Onyxia drop from (where else?) Onyxia.

Shoulders

Assuming you can get an Ikfirus’ Sack of Wonder (see below), you’ll want to buy the tier shoulders eventually in the interests of rocking four-piece tier 10. However, until that point, the Titan-Forged shoulders are an excellent choice.

Enchant: You have a few different options here. The classic tanking choice would be Greater Inscription of the Pinnacle from Sons of Hodir exalted (or, if you’re a scribe, Master’s Inscription of the Pinnacle), but if you prefer more health, you can use Greater Inscription of the Gladiator (available for 10,000 honor).

If you want to go for a more offensively-oriented enchant, use Greater Inscription of the Axe from Sons of Hodir exalted (or Master’s Inscription of the Axe for scribes).

* Titan-Forged Spaulders of Triumph: Available for 40 Wintergrasp Marks of Honor. A really impressive piece, and pretty close to the ToGC-25 heroic tier shoulders, and even the ICC-10H shoulders.

* Relentless Gladiator’s Dragonhide Spaulders: Available for 60 Emblems of Frost or 10,550 honor and 600 arena points.

* Lasherweave Shoulderpads: Available for 60 Emblems of Frost.

* Duskstalker Pauldrons (Alliance)/Duskstalker Shoulderpads (Horde): The ilevel 245, non-set melee leather shoulders available for 45 Emblems of Triumph.

* Malfurion’s Shoulderpads of Triumph (Alliance)/Runetotem’s Shoulderpads of Triumph (Horde): The ilevel 245, tier 9 shoulders available for 45 Emblems of Triumph and 1 Trophy of the Crusade.

* Furious Gladiator’s Dragonhide Spaulders: Available for 50 Emblems of Triumph or 34,700 honor.

* Malfurion’s Shoulderpads of Conquest (Alliance)/Runetotem’s Shoulderpads of Conquest (Horde): The ilevel 232, tier 9 shoulders available for 30 Emblems of Triumph.

* Spaulders of Black Betrayal: Dropped by Falric in heroic Halls of Reflection.

Cloak

This slot’s a little on the odd side. The bear’s best-in-slot piece is available for Frost badges (and second best-in-slot, as well) — and then after that, it’s a damn long drop to number three unless you have options from raids.

Enchant: Enchant Cloak — Major Agility. If you’re an engineer, you’ll want a Flexweave Underlay here.

* Sentinel’s Winter Cloak: Available for 50 Emblems of Frost. Armor, baby, armor! This is the best cloak in the game for bears, period. Get this and wear it with pride.

* Recovered Scarlet Onslaught Cape: Available for 50 Emblems of Frost. Yes, this would be the melee DPS frost emblem cloak. While the Sentinel’s Cloak is waaaaaaay ahead, I will grudgingly allow you to buy this, slap an agility enchant on it, and use it as both a hybrid bear/cat cloak if your Frost emblem income is on the smallish side.

* Titan-Forged Cloak of Victory: Available for 25 Wintergrasp Marks of Honor. What makes this ilevel 245 piece better than the 264 Wrathful piece below? See that socket?

* Wrathful Gladiator’s Cloak of Victory: Available for 52,200 honor.

* Wrathful Gladiator’s Cloak of Triumph: This one exchanges the Victory cloak’s +hit for +crit. If you’re already close to or over the +hit cap (263 hit), get this instead of VIctory.

* Gale-Proof Cloak: If you can find a PUG bum-rushing a Sarth-10 3D kill, this is a good (albeit early) piece.

* Platinum Mesh Cloak: Available for 25 Emblems of Valor.

* Eerie Runeblade Polisher: If all else fails, you can try for this zone drop from normal Halls of Reflection, but the +parry on it is obviously wasted on a bear.

Chest

Don’t buy the tier chest piece. It’s not that it’s a bad piece, but the non-set pieces are just so friggin’ wonderful that the tier piece is a waste of emblems.

Enchant: Enchant Chest — Powerful Stats.

* Ikfirus’ Sack of Wonder: This is amazing. It’s a BoE drop from the easiest “boss” in ICC-25, Faction Gunships. The odds of finding a druid or rogue from another raid willing to sell this to you are small, but try for it anyway. Incidentally, the heroic version is best in slot (and thus naturally refuses to drop for me). Bribe everyone on your server, break hearts, punt gnomes, do whatever you have to do, but get one.

* Shadow Seeker’s Tunic: Available for 95 Emblems of Frost. Ikfirus has definitely gotten more press than the badge piece, but that’s got a lot to do with the scarcity of +hit and particularly +expertise on Icecrown leather. In the interests of full disclosure, Shadow Seeker’s is ever so slightly better than the ilevel 264 Ikfirus if you compare the two in a vacuum, but you’ll almost certainly still want the latter if for no other reason than getting closer to the hard +expertise cap (56).

* Lasherweave Raiment: Why are you looking at this? You’re wasting valuable time that could be spent getting a Sack! It’s available for 95 Emblems of Frost if you insist on buying it, but I will be very disappointed in you if you do.

* Relentless Gladiator’s Dragonhide Robes: Available for 95 Emblems of Frost or 13,200 honor and 770 arena points. Gee, that sounds like a lot of trouble to go farm up. Why don’t you go buy a Sack?

* Knightbane Carapace (Alliance)/Knightbane Carapace (Horde): Leatherworking BoE from tier 9. It’s quite good, but still pretty expensive to have made. If I were you, I’d put your money toward a Sack.

* Malfurion’s Raiments of Triumph (Alliance)/Runetotem’s Raiments of Triumph (Horde): The ilevel 245, tier 9 chest, and I am extremely put out that you are sill here reading this instead of going out and getting a Sack.

* Furious Gladiator’s Dragonhide Robes: Available for 75 Emblems of Triumph or 54,500 honor. Sackety-sack sack.

* Malfurion’s Raiments of Conquest (Alliance)/Runetotem’s Raiments of Conquest (Horde): The ilevel 232, tier 9 chest, available for 50 Emblems of Triumph. Saaaaaaaaaaaack.

* Choking Hauberk: Drops from Marwyn in heroic Halls of Reflection. While you’re killing him, ask him if he knows anyone with a Sack to sell.

* Blackened Geist Ribs: Drops from the Captain’s Chest in normal Halls of Reflection, and WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE INSTEAD OF AT YOUR SERVER’S AUCTION HOUSE?

Bracers

There aren’t a lot of compelling pieces in this slot, but fortunately the really good pieces are all fairly easy to get.

Enchant: Enchant Bracers — Major Stamina. If you’re a leatherworker, use Fur Lining — Stamina.

* Toskk’s Maximized Wristguards: I’m going to break my self-imposed rule concerning raid loot to point these out. They’re named for the player who pioneered Toskk’s DPS gear method for feral druids. They drop from Deathbringer Saurfang-25 (the heroic version is best-in-slot for bears … and, judging from the number of rolls I see, everyone else too), and because a lot of PUGs do make it that far (and because they honor a famous druid player), I really wanted to note that here. On a somewhat uglier note, be prepared for a lot of competition.

* Wrathful Gladiator’s Armwraps of Triumph: A really fantastic PvP piece that’s within a whisper of Toskk’s. It’ll run you 43,400 honor.

* Bracers of Swift Death (Alliance)/Bracers of Swift Death (Horde): These are a lot cheaper than they used to be, but if gold is a problem, just farm up the honor for the Wrathful bracers.

* Chewed Leather Wristguards: Drops from Ick and Krick in heroic Pit of Saron. Good for a pinch, but they are far below the quality of the above three pieces.

Gloves

I would ordinarily recommend making the gloves the first tier 10 piece you buy, but both the gloves and the legs have a chance to drop off Toravon. I’m a firm believer in Murphy’s Law, so I’m a little ambivalent over recommending that you dump badges into a piece that may very well drop off your weekly VoA run. This one’s up to you.

Enchant: Enchant Gloves — Major Agility, or Reticulated Armor Webbing if you’re an engineer.

* Cat Burglar’s Grips: Available for 60 Emblems of Frost, but don’t bother. Buy the tier instead.

* Lasherweave Handgrips: The tier gloves are really lovely. Available for 60 Emblems of Frost, or (more rarely) dropped by Toravon.

* Relentless Gladiator’s Dragonhide Gloves: Dropped by Koralon and Toravon, and also available for 60 Emblems of Frost or 8,000 honor and 440 arena points.

* Malfurion’s Handgrips of Triumph (Alliance)/Runetotem’s Handggrips of Triumph (Horde): The ilevel 245, tier 9 gloves, available for 45 Emblems of Triumph and 1 Trophy of the Crusade.

* Furious Gladiator’s Dragonhide Gloves: Dropped by Emalon and Koralon, and also available for 50 Emblems of Triumph or 43,300 honor.

* Malfurion’s Handgrips of Conquest (Alliance)/Runetotem’s Handgrips of Conquest (Horde): The ilevel 232, tier 9 gloves, available for 30 Emblems of Triumph.

* Gloves of the Argent Fanatic: Drops from Eadric/Argent Confessor’s cache (i.e. second boss) in normal Trial of the Champion.

* Carpal Tunnelers: Frankly, these aren’t that great for a bear, but they’ll tide you over until you get something better. Drops from Marwyn in normal Halls of Reflection.

Belt

Another slot with a PvP piece playing a starring role!

Enchant: Not an enchant as such, but you’ll want an Eternal Belt Buckle.

* Vengeful Noose: Available for 60 Emblems of Frost. This is another piece I would really hesitate to drop the badges on, however. The Wrathful belt is pretty close to them.

* Relentless Gladiator’s Belt of Triumph: Yep, folks, this isn’t that far off either. Drops from Koralon and Toravon, or available for 34,100 honor. Honestly, I’d just farm toward the Wrathful belt.

* Death-warmed Belt: Leatherworking BoE.

* Belt of the Twilight Assassin: Available for 28 Emblems of Conquest.

* Flayer’s Black Belt: Drops from Forgemaster Garfrost in normal Pit of Saron.

Legs

As stated earlier, these have a chance to drop off Toravon, and so I’m a little antsy over recommending that you run out and buy them with your Frost Emblems as a result. However, the tier 10 legs are also very good, so if they drop off Toravon the week after you dump 95 badges into them, try not to scream.

Enchant: Frosthide Leg Armor.

* Bladeborn Leggings: Leatherworking BoE. Better as an individual piece than the ilevel 251 tier legs, but hellishly expensive to have made. And you do have an Ikfirus, right? Just buy the tier.

* Lasherweave Legguards: Available for 95 Emblems of Frost.

* Relentless Gladiator’s Dragonhide Legguards: Dropped by Koralon and Toravon, or available for 95 Emblems of Frost or 13,200 honor and 770 arena points.

* Malfurion’s Leggings of Triumph (Alliance)/Runetotem’s Legguards of Triumph (Horde): The ilevel 245, tier 9 legs, available for 75 Emblems of Triumph and 1 Trophy of the Crusade.

* Titan-Forged Leather Legguards of Triumph: Available for 40 Wintergrasp Marks of Honor.

* Furious Gladiator’s Dragonhide Legguards: Dropped by Emalon and Koralon, or available for 75 Emblems of Triumph or 34,700 honor.

* Malfurion’s Legguards of Conquest (Alliance)/Runetotem’s Legguards of Conquest (Horde): Available for 40 Emblems of Triumph.

* Leggings of Wavering Shadow: Available for 39 Emblems of Conquest.

* Fleshwerk Leggings: Drops from Scourgelord Tyrannus in heroic Pit of Saron.

Feet

Not a slot with a lot of options, but the ones you’ve got are very good.

Enchant: In general, Enchant Boots — Tuskarr’s Vitality is the way to go. If you’re really hurting for avoidance, try Enchant Boots — Superior Agility. If you want more health, Enchant Boots — Greater Fortitude.

* Footpads of Impending Death: Leatherworking BoE. Like the Bladeborn Leggings (above), these will be hellishly expensive to have made. Unlike the leggings, they don’t interfere with your ability to get a tier bonus, and they are definitely worth getting unless you’re in a guild that’s farming heroic Marrowgar-25 (who drops Frostbitten Fur Boots, the bear’s best-in-slot — but Footpads of Impending Death are a close number two).

* Relentless Gladiator’s Boots of Triumph: Dropped by Koralon and Toravon, or available for 34,100 honor.

* Footpads of Silence: Another Leatherworking BoE, and considerably cheaper than their 264 brother (but, if it were me, I’d just farm the Wrathful boots rather than spend the money).

* Treads of Dismal Fortune: Dropped by the Black Knight in heroic Trial of the Champion.

* Blighted Leather Footpads: Drops in the Captain’s Chest in heroic Halls of Reflection.

Rings

The easiest combination to swing out of the following will be the Ashen Verdict reputation ring (provided you can get to friendly or better with them, and that’s quick) and a Clutch of Fortification.

Enchant: If you’re an enchanter, you’ll want to slap Enchant Ring — Stamina on both.

* Ashen Band of Endless Courage: You do have to step inside Icecrown Citadel for this one, but you don’t ever have to hit a boss to farm up the ilevel 277 reputation ring. I’ll grant that farming Ashen Verdict reputation is a fairly boring way to experience an otherwise engaging and interesting raid.

* Harbinger’s Bone Band: An Icecrown Citadel BoE zone drop. Check the auction house, or ask around your realm to see if anyone’s willing to sell it.

* Signifed Ring of Binding: Dropped by Onyxia-25. A surprisingly good piece, not least because of the meaty armor allocation — and you may find use for the resistance at some point down the line.

* Clutch of Fortification: Available for 35 Emblems of Triumph.

* Ashen Band of Endless Vengeance: The cat reputation ring is a decent hybrid piece if you switch between the two specs frequently.

* Runed Ring of Binding: Dropped by Onyxia-10. The 10-man version of the ring described above.

* The Leviathan’s Coil: I wouldn’t ordinarily list this one because it’s a raid drop, but if you get Razorscale Must Die! as a weekly raid quest on your realm, you’ll be going through Flame Leviathan to get to her. This is still an extremely good bear ring.

* Runed Band of the Kirin Tor: I am not fond of these rings (thousands of gold for what amounts to a free hearthstone isn’t worth it, in my humble opinion), but this is another OK hybrid piece if you switch between bear and cat frequently.

* Signet of Winter: You may occasionally find this Ulduar BoE on the auction house, but I would not go looking for it over any of the other pieces listed here due to the +parry on it.

Trinkets

Trinkets are hard to rank, and it’s a tough slot to fill outside of raids. Ironically, even in raids it’s the hardest slot to fill, because everyone and his brother is going to be after them. You may want to try getting as many of the following as possible, and simply switching them in and out to suit different fights.

If you’re a jewelcrafter, you will want to make both a Figurine: Monarch Crab and a Figurine: Ruby Hare.

Alchemists will want to make an Indestructible Alchemist’s Stone.

Engineers will want to make a Sonic Booster, which is especially helpful because it helps with threat generation in addition to being a stamina boost.

* Corroded Skeleton Key: Available for 60 Emblems of Frost.

* Glyph of Indomitability: Available for 50 Emblems of Triumph.

* The Black Heart: Dropped by the Black Knight in normal Trial of the Champion.

* Darkmoon Card: Greatness: Still amazing, and an equally good hybrid piece for cat DPS. Accept no substitutes.

* Essence of Gossamer: Dropped by Hadronox in heroic Azjol-Nerub.

* Ick’s Rotting Thumb: Dropped by Ick and Krick in heroic Pit of Saron. Raw dodge is not as useful to us as agility (hence ranking this below DMC:G), and the use effect is so-so, but a good piece if your dodge isn’t as high as you’d like.

Weapon

The weapon is by far the biggest nuisance. With the introduction of the Battered Hilt/Quel’dalar questline, the #1 slot for non-raid weapons is pretty easy to pick, but it’ll require a lot of luck or a lot of gold on your part.

Sorry, folks — there’s no real way to cheap out on this one. If you have a lousy weapon, then unless the rest of your gear is jaw-droppingly good, you’re probably going to have threat issues versus geared DPS. The bear’s unfortunate dependence on weapons is something we’ve talked about earlier (and it should get fixed with the stat changes in Cataclysm), and I would really recommend trying to get a PUG raid for somewhere if for no other reason than getting a decent weapon.

Enchant: Mongoose.

* Lightborn Spire: Reward from the Battered Hilt quest line. Very, very expensive, but the quest line alone is worth it. If you don’t have the money to shell out for one of these, then either hope for a lucky roll while you’re running the Icecrown heroics, or try solo farming the first pull in heroic Forge of Souls (doable even for a bear in mediocre gear; just Root one of the skeletons if you can’t tank them both). It’s probably going to be long and boring, but at least you won’t face the agony of losing Hilts to players who respond, “LOL, it’s the third one I’ve gotten.”

* Reinforced Thunderstrike: Dropped by Onyxia-25.

* Reclaimed Thunderstrike: Dropped by Onyxia-10.

* Orca-Hunter’s Harpoon: Dropped by Marwyn in heroic Halls of Reflection.

* Marrowstrike: Dropped by Argent Confessor Paletress in heroic Trial of the Champion.

* Silvery Sylvan Stave (Alliance)/Staff of Feral Furies (Horde): Available for 25 Champion’s Seals at the Argent Tournament. Due to the armor on it, this tends to rank above a few Naxx pieces and technically outranks Marrowstrike, but Marrowstrike still beats it hands down for threat generation.

Idol

Idol of the Crying Moon is really fantastic, but there’s no denying that Lacerate-stacking is more suited to single-target tanking. For 5-man tanking or anything where you’ve got to worry about AoE, Mutilation is the top pick, but Corruptor’s not too far behind (and is even a slightly greater contribution to Time To Live) assuming you’re using Mangle on cooldown.

* Idol of the Crying Moon: Available for 30 Emblems of Frost.

* Idol of Mutilation: Available for 25 Emblems of Triumph.

* Idol of the Corruptor: Available for 19 Emblems of Conquest.
